Book Review on Inheritance

Christopher Paolini's Inheritance furthers Eragon and Saphira's adventure to defeat Galbatorix and bring peace to Alagaesia. Where the long war between the varden and Galbatorix comes to a head. 

The theme of the book is war and peace. To get to peace Eragon and Saphira must end this war. For it has ravaged the land and left shattered families and destroyed lives in it's wake. Would it be better to continue the war, or just let Galbatorix remain as king? The war has cost so much, innocent blood has been shed, children murdered, cities pillaged. All this just to take down one man. Who which happens to be immortal seeing as he's ruled Alagaesia for nearly 200 years and has the appearance of a 40 year old man. 

Eragon faces paralyzing new enemies and many horrifying throughout this tale. All to bring Galbatorix down. He kills countless soldiers and some soldiers who've been turned into monstrosities which feel no pain. He faces pain in ways he did not know he could. Mental, physical, and emotional. He experiences fear in it's worst form. Yet he pursues his noble quest to free Alagaesia from the evil kings reign.

Eragon evolves form a mere human into something more, elf like. As in a hybrid. He looks like a human but has the speed, strength, and wisdom of an elf. Which in turn makes him an even more versatile and dangerous enemy for Galbatorix. When he eventually gets to Galbatorix it will take every last ounce of his strength, along with all of his friends and allies to defeat him and his brother Murtagh. 

The setting takes place in the Dark ages when swords and arrows were used to wage wars and kings stilled ruled. Whether good or evil. Horses were used as transportation, unless you rode a dragon in which case you were revered at a god. A place that magic was used to kill, or heal.

The final battle approaches to find out if Eragon and the Varden prevail, or if King Galbatorix shall continue his evil rule and force Eragon and Saphira to obey him.

Female police officers often find themselves discriminated against, there also is a pay gap between male and female officers. Female officers also have to deal with many stereotypes. Female officers tend to be on the receiving end of a lot of criticism. According to the article FEMALE COP STEREOTYPE  "There is the female cop stereotype, the pressures of having to prove themselves to their male counterparts, as well as society's expectation of any female who is out in the workforce." Female officers receive a lot more crap, and the expectations they have to reach are considerably higher than men. So in turn being a cop can be more stressful to women than men.

Two of the most common stereotypes according to this article are based on appearance. "If she's attractive but not physically intimidating, guys will roll their eyes or comment that she's inadequate to back them in a physical confrontation with a suspect". However, the article states that " if she is a hulking presence, guys will roll their eyes and comment on the fact that she's a "butch".  Both of these are very common stereotypes. It may not be morally correct, but it is what it is.

Another stereotype is the belief that women should remain at home and take care of house chores, kids and other less masculine tasks. However the article FEMALE COP STEREOTYPE explains that " times are changing, and many agree that family/house work has to be shared between both the male and female. I agree with this idea because to remain close a couple must work together, and if their life at home is good then so should their attitudes at the work place.

Men believing in stereotypes makes it stressful for women around the globe to achieve a better life for themselves. These stereotypes listed are simply for Female Cops. After reading this article I've realized that i myself have believed in a few stereotypes when it comes to women, and i will strive to do better and not judge them prematurely.

Men and women will never successfully work together as long as these sexist boundaries we've placed ourselves in remain. Stereotypes are just one layer of many that we have to get through to be successful in the world that we live in.

Book Review on Brisingr
Christopher Paolini's Brisingr intrigued me with its rare form of word use and awesome action scenes, along with an interesting story line. If you prefer a decent length book, and one that has a love story plus death defying action scenes i'd recommend Brisingr.

The theme of this book is probably as best as i can describe, good will overcome evil. I believe that the life lesson Christopher Paolini is trying to teach us that even against overwhelming odds, if you believe in yourself and others believe in you, you will succeed. For example Eragon the main protagonist in this story  along with his dragon Saphira fight his brother Murtagh and his dragon Thorn. Murtagh has been trained by the evil king Galbatorix and has much greater power than Eragon. However by sheer force of will and the assistance of his elven bodyguards Eragon beats Murtagh and saves the Varden "Rebel forces" from certain doom.

I feel like even though Eragon is a dragon rider, he is as simple a person as you or me. He can use magic, has a dragon, and even uses an enchanted sword, but through all this he still ends up having normal person problems, such as love and anger. Eragon is in love with an elf named Arya and even though she seems young, elves are immortal and she is centuries older than him. Due to the age difference and the war going on she won't accept his feelings.

The setting in this story takes you to a far away land called Alagaesia where the creatures are much larger than they should be, and humans are not the only sentient species. There are Elves, Dwarves, Dragons, Humans, and Urgals. But ever since Galbatorix took over the land Dragons, the oldest and most powerful race, have nearly went extinct. Also the day an age this book takes place is in some what the middle ages when people used swords and bows to do battle and used horses for transportation.
This book does connect with me on a personal level, because its fantasy and it makes me wish the world was actually like this. The possibilities of riding dragons and preforming amazing magical feats appeals to me. I wish the world was like this.

I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a good fantasy action novel, with a side love story.

Female Police officers are often mistreated because of their gender. Barbara Raffel Price addresses some of these problems in her article FEMALE POLICE OFFICERS IN THE UNITED STATES.

 Male police officers tend to be stricter when enforcing the law than females. According to Brian Rowe from the Federal Trade Commission.  "In 2005, 10.8 percent of  male drivers and 6.8 percent of  female drivers that were stopped by police. The male driver were cited more than the female drivers." This simply means officers were biased when it came to who received a ticket and who did not. No matter how the law is broken, both male and female officers are biased when it comes down to law breaking.

Female law enforcement officers are different in their methods of law enforcement. Rather than give you a ticket and punish you for a minor offense, they may simply scold you and let you go on your way. In most cases they are weaker when it comes to physical strength than men, but however in most cases they have superior intellect. According to CMPD, "police officers are exposed to undesirable and sometimes traumatic situations. Compassion and empathy during those times serve the community well. Many of the interpersonal skills women traditionally possess are invaluable to effective policing." Which basically means, female police officers tend to think more rationally when confronted with a difficult situation. Usually females will get out of a ticket when the officer is a male, because they are attractive. However on the flip side, when the officer is a female, the law breaker has a higher chance of getting a ticket no matter who they are. Female and male officers have their strengths and weaknesses, but working together makes them stronger as a unit and helps each of them improve upon their weaknesses.

The number of female police officers compared to males is still relatively small, but every year there are more and more of them. According to Barbara Raffel Price in her article ," In 1970, only two percent of all police were women, but by 1991, nine percent of all police were women.Today, in the New York Police Department, 15% of all uniformed officers in the department are women, but only 9% are sergeants, 6% are lieutenants, 3% are captains and 4% are above the rank of captain  Women are still having problems in escalating through law enforcement ranks, but through all their struggle and sacrifice they are making a difference, slowly but surely.

Even though women are acquiring positions in law enforcement, some people like it, some people don't. Research has shown that women in policing are not as easily accepted by their peers, their supervisors, or their own police department. Barbara Raffel Price stated in her article that "Woman are viewed with skepticism or worse by their male counterparts in spite of the fact that women have been doing police work for over one hundred years." However, she also stated that the public responded well to more law enforcement officers being female. "In the recent years acceptance by the public has grown as women police have been seen more frequently on the street on patrol and in uniform."

The next time your out and about and see a female police officer, talk to her. Ask her if people, whether; male, female, peers, or lawbreakers discriminate against her because of her gender. Get her opinion on things.
